Fresh tension is brewing in Kano Emirate as two rival Emirs have announced different individuals for the prestigious title of Galadiman Kano, following the passing of Alhaji Abbas Sanusi.
The latest development has deepened the ongoing divisions within the traditional institution, further exposing the fractures that have troubled the Emirate’s leadership in recent years.
The Kano Emirate Council under Emir Aminu Ado Bayero confirmed the appointment of Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero as the new Galadiman Kano.
A letter dated April 21, 2025, and signed by Alhaji Awaisu Abbas Sanusi, stated that Emir Aminu had approved the promotion of Sanusi Ado Bayero from Wamban Kano to Galadiman Kano, citing his loyalty and service.
The turbaning ceremony for Sanusi Ado Bayero is scheduled to take place on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Emir’s palace located in the Nasarawa Royal House.
However, in a parallel move, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, also named a different individual for the same title.
On April 8, 2025, Sanusi II announced the appointment of Alhaji Mannir Sanusi, the District Head of Bichi, as Galadiman Kano.
Speaking on his elevation, Mannir Sanusi said, “Khalifa Sanusi II, after extensive consultations with key stakeholders within the Emirate, approved my appointment. I accept this honor with deep humility and a strong resolve to serve.”
Insiders close to Sanusi II revealed that the move was aimed at safeguarding the heritage and traditions of the Emirate amid the leadership disputes.
The twin appointments have widened the cracks between the two royal camps, each asserting its authority over the Emirate’s historic titles.
The backdrop to the dispute includes the dethronement of Sanusi II in 2020 and the subsequent restructuring of the Emirate, a period that has seen growing tensions and competing claims to legitimacy.
Political commentator, Dr. Kabiru Sulaiman, remarked, “This is more than a tussle over titles; it is a struggle over the legacy and political influence of the Kano Emirate. The battle for legitimacy is becoming even more pronounced.”
With both camps moving ahead with their separate turbaning ceremonies, analysts warn that the rivalry could further destabilize the institution, leaving the once-unified Emirate facing a highly uncertain future.
As events unfold, many are watching closely to see which side will emerge stronger in this contest for traditional supremacy.
