My political journey about Nigeria, not personal interests – El-Rufai

Must read

Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has emphasized that his political decisions have consistently been driven by loyalty to Nigeria rather than allegiance to any individual or political party.

During a recent visit to Kano, where he met with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), El-Rufai explained that his move to the SDP was motivated by a desire to help create a credible political platform free from the influence of political godfathers and the dysfunction he believes has plagued both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Twelve years ago, we built the APC and unseated a sitting president. But the challenges today demand a new strategy,” he said.

“We are bringing together Nigerians who feel abandoned by the current system, and the SDP offers a truly democratic and fair alternative.”

El-Rufai dismissed suggestions that his actions stem from bitterness over being sidelined politically, insisting that he has no need to prove anything at this stage of his life.

“At 65, I could easily retire. But Nigeria is at a critical point, and I believe it’s about securing the nation’s future, not about personal ambition,” he said.

The former governor, who previously supported the idea of power shifting to the South, argued that Nigeria’s problems now call for leadership based on merit rather than regional considerations.

“Our country’s issues are too deep for us to focus on where a leader comes from. What we need is someone capable and visionary,” he added.

Addressing recent defections to the ruling APC, El-Rufai said the SDP’s focus remained on engaging the grassroots rather than chasing high-profile politicians.

“One governor only has one vote. Real elections are decided by the people, not political elites,” he said.

He also rejected claims that the SDP’s growth is limited to certain regions, saying the movement is steadily building a national presence.

“We are quietly expanding into the South too. True nation-building happens at the grassroots, not through publicity stunts,” El-Rufai stated.

Reflecting on his time in the APC, El-Rufai said he never hesitated to speak out when things went wrong, even under an administration he helped bring to power.

“When Buhari’s administration faltered, I voiced my concerns. When the naira redesign policy harmed Nigerians, I challenged it. My loyalty has always been to Nigeria, never to individuals,” he emphasized.

El-Rufai also called on young Nigerians not to lose hope, urging them to join efforts to rebuild the country.

“I lost my parents at eight, yet Nigeria gave me the opportunity to succeed. We must not surrender this nation to corrupt leaders. It’s time to create a country where every child can dream and achieve,” he said.
