Rastafari community condemns Gov Bago’s comment on dreadlocks, demands retraction

Must read

The Nigerian Rastafari community has strongly criticized Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, over recent comments perceived as profiling citizens with dreadlocks.

AFRIPOST had reported that the Governor had frowned at males who wear dreadlocks due to insecurity ravaging the state.

However, the group described the governor’s remarks as insensitive, condemnable, and a reflection of “educational deficiency and historical blindness.”

In a statement issued by HonouRebel Myke Pam, Chairman of the Rastafari Continental Council (RCC) Nigeria Ital Yard, the community expressed outrage at Governor Bago’s directive to security operatives to arrest, fine, and forcibly shave individuals with dreadlocks in the state.

The group warned that such orders not only infringe on citizens’ fundamental rights but also evoke memories of oppressive regimes.

“The video of Mr. Bago directing security operatives to target dreadlock wearers is akin to asking them to maim and kill citizens he swore to protect,” the statement read.

Describing the governor’s focus on appearances as misplaced, the Rastafari community urged him to channel his energy into addressing pressing issues such as poverty, insecurity, and education backwardness plaguing Niger State.

“We are saddened that instead of tackling the real challenges facing his people, the governor is chasing shadows,” the RCC said, emphasizing that Niger State remains ravaged by terrorism, poverty, and poor infrastructure.

The group further clarified that dreadlocks are an ancient, spiritual, and scriptural practice, deeply rooted in Rastafari culture.

They stressed that Rastafari people are law-abiding, peaceful, and patriotic citizens who should not be subjected to discrimination based on appearance.

“The fact that the governor or his advisers are ignorant of the historical and religious significance of dreadlocks is pitiable and frightening, especially for someone presiding over the lives of millions,” the statement continued.

The Rastafari community called on Governor Bago to immediately withdraw his comments to prevent escalation of tensions, warning that profiling based on appearance is unjust and unacceptable.

They also urged security agencies in Niger State to respect the cultural, religious, and spiritual rights of all residents and to perform their duties as defenders of rights rather than violators.

The statement concluded with a call for urgent corrective action, reminding the governor that “a stitch in time saves nine.”
