ECWA laments rising insecurity, says over N300m spent on ransom

The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has raised concerns over the increasing cases of violence, banditry, and kidnappings affecting its members in Kaduna and Plateau states, calling on the Federal Government to take swift action.

Speaking during a press conference in Jos, the General Secretary of ECWA, Rev. Ayuba Asheshe, revealed that the Church has spent more than N300 million on ransom payments, with over 50 members still being held captive.

Rev. Asheshe said, “ECWA expresses deep sorrow over the wave of violent incidents impacting its members and communities, particularly in Kaduna and Plateau states.

The ongoing crises, marked by banditry, kidnappings, and violent militia attacks, require urgent and decisive intervention from the government and all stakeholders.”

Highlighting the situation in Kaduna State, he pointed out that the Kwassam DCC in Kauru Local Government Area has been severely affected by persistent attacks.

According to him, over 20 lives have been lost, and more than 100 individuals, including church members and other residents, have been abducted.

Despite the significant amount already spent on ransoms, Rev. Asheshe lamented that over 50 people remain in captivity, placing an enormous financial and emotional burden on the Church and the families involved.

Many of the victims, he said, have lost their sources of livelihood.

He also noted that the attackers, who primarily target farming communities, are further endangering food security in the region by disrupting agricultural activities.
