JUST IN: Gov Otti denies plans to defect to APC, affirms loyalty to LP

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has dismissed rumors suggesting that he intends to leave the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to the LP, the party that facilitated his rise to power, and made it clear that he has no plans to switch allegiances.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, Governor Otti strongly rejected claims that he had been holding secret meetings with Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State to discuss plans to join the APC.

He called the rumors unfounded and urged the public to ignore them.

Governor Otti emphasized that any significant political decision, especially one that could affect the people of Abia State, would be made with the consultation and involvement of the state’s citizens.

He also cautioned against turning the political climate into a focus on the 2027 elections, which are still over two years away, arguing that governance should be the priority rather than premature political maneuvering.

Ekeoma’s full statement on Saturday read: “The claim that Governor Otti met with Governor Uzodinma regarding his supposed defection to the APC is completely false and baseless. It has no merit and should be disregarded.

“Following the National Economic Council meeting on Thursday, April 24, Governor Otti, along with some colleagues, attended the birthday celebration of Governor Uzodinma’s twin daughters. This was a personal event unrelated to politics.

“It is natural that Governor Otti’s achievements and popularity would attract attention and speculation. However, any political decision that could affect Abians will always be made in consultation with the people and in the best interests of the state.

“Governor Otti believes that with less than two years into his administration, it would be unjust to focus on the 2027 elections instead of delivering good governance to the people of Abia.

“To clarify once again, Governor Otti remains a member of the Labour Party and has no plans to join the APC or any other party.”
