Flamingos secure 2025 U-17 women’s World Cup spot after stalemate with Algeria

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, sealed their place at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after playing out a goalless draw against Algeria on Friday.

The 2022 bronze medalists, determined to finish their qualifying campaign on a high note, held off strong pressure from the Algerian side during the second-leg clash at Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida.

With a 4-0 cushion from the first leg, the Nigerian girls took a composed approach, soaking up the hosts’ attacks while trying to hit them on the counter.

Despite cold weather conditions in Blida, near Algiers, the Flamingos remained resilient, grinding out the result they needed to book their ticket to Morocco.

Although they dominated possession and created the better chances, the Nigerian team was unable to find the back of the net.

However, the goalless draw was enough to ensure qualification with a 4-0 aggregate victory.

Their dominant performance in the first leg proved decisive in securing passage to the World Cup, where they will be one of Africa’s five representatives, alongside host nation Morocco.

This year’s tournament, scheduled to run from October 17 to November 5, will be historic, featuring 24 teams for the first time.

Since the inception of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand in 2008, Nigeria has missed qualification only once, at the 2018 edition held in Uruguay.
