Fubara opens up on defection to APC after meeting with Tinubu

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has categorically denied reports suggesting he is planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his recent return from the United Kingdom, where he met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Amid growing political tension and online speculation, reports emerged earlier in the week claiming that Fubara, along with Governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, was considering a switch to the APC as part of political repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While Oborevwori has since confirmed his move to the APC, a defection that also reportedly included his deputy and former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor Fubara has distanced himself from such plans.

In a statement issued Thursday through his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Jerry Omatsogunwa, Fubara refuted the rumour, asserting that he remains fully committed to the PDP.

“I’m not sure the governor is even aware of the defection rumour,” Omatsogunwa told DAILY POST. “As it stands now, we are still in the PDP, and nothing has changed.”

He emphasized that Governor Fubara not only remains a loyal PDP member but continues to serve as the Deputy Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, reinforcing his active role within the party.

“As of this moment, April 24, 2025, at 9:46 a.m., Governor Siminalayi Fubara is still a committed member of the PDP,” Omatsogunwa added.

Fubara’s clarification follows rising interest in the political dynamics of Rivers State and broader speculation about realignments across party lines in the lead-up to the next national elections.

His media aide also made it clear that there is no connection between the governor’s UK trip and any alleged defection plans.
