Electrician electrocuted while fixing faulty power line in Oyo

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in Eruwa, Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State, where an unidentified man lost his life after being electrocuted while working on a high-tension power line.

According to reports, the incident took place in the Odi Babaode area of the town, where the victim was attempting to repair a fault on a 33KV high-tension cable without first disconnecting power from the source.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Canon Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the unfortunate event in a statement released on Friday.

He said the victim was electrocuted while handling a live power line belonging to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

“The electrician was working on an active power line without isolating the feeder, which led to his electrocution,” Akinyinka explained.

He added that the fire service responded to a distress call from one Adelanre Adeyinka at about 3:29 p.m. on Wednesday.

A rescue team led by Peluola Babatunde was dispatched to the scene but arrived to find that the victim had already died.

The deceased’s body was subsequently recovered and handed over to officers from the Eruwa Police Station.

Akinyinka stressed the importance of safety when dealing with electrical systems, advising that only qualified professionals should handle live electrical installations.

“Life is irreplaceable. Only trained technicians or engineers should manage such risky electrical repairs,” he warned.
