The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep regret over the mass defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, along with other party leaders and members, from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, described the development as both painful and disappointing, particularly given the party’s steadfast support for them.
At a ceremony in Abuja where he presented a certificate of return to Jude Ezenwafor, the PDP’s governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra election, Damagum stated, “This is a deeply regrettable situation. If there is any state where loyalty should have been expected, it was Delta, given the immense support the party has shown.”
He went on to clarify that the decision to leave was made by those individuals, and not because of any wrongdoings by the PDP.
“We supported Delta, from the emergence of the governor to his predecessor, who was also our vice-presidential candidate. To be honest, we never expected this turn of events,” he added.
Despite the setback, Damagum reassured party members that the PDP had overcome similar challenges in the past and would remain strong.
He also mentioned that the party leadership was already in the process of forming a caretaker committee in Delta to manage the party’s affairs in the state.
Looking towards the 2027 elections, Damagum emphasized that the focus should be on the well-being of Nigeria, not on the number of governors held by a party.
He called on all PDP members to unite and work together in the effort to restore the country, insisting that no challenge was beyond the party’s capacity to overcome.
