Yobe Council bans public carrying of cutlasses, sharp objects

Must read

Authorities in Karasuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State have introduced a new bye-law prohibiting residents from carrying cutlasses and other sharp objects in public places, including communities and markets across the area.

The Director of Personnel Management (DPM) for the council, Magaji Muhammad, confirmed the development to reporters, saying the regulation was introduced in response to increasing concerns about public safety and the misuse of such items, which could lead to harassment or violence.

He explained that the law is designed to enhance peace and order, protect lives and property, and create a safer environment for both residents and visitors.

To ensure enforcement, the council has directed security agencies to strengthen surveillance at entry points into towns and market areas.

Officers will also conduct regular patrols and arrest anyone found violating the rule.

“We have already launched a public awareness campaign to inform the people about the new directive,” Magaji stated.

He also called on the judiciary to support the initiative by ensuring swift prosecution of offenders under the bye-law, emphasizing the need for collective cooperation in maintaining law and order in the local government area.
