Lecturers resume indefinite strike over unmet demands

Lecturers at Kaduna State University, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have reinstated an indefinite strike, citing the state government’s failure to fulfill previous agreements.

The decision was made public in a statement issued on Thursday by the ASUU branch chairman at the university, Dr. Peter Adamu, in Kaduna.

He explained that the resumption of the strike followed what he described as a breach of trust by the Kaduna State Government.

Dr. Adamu highlighted several unresolved issues, including the non-payment of withheld salaries, outstanding earned academic allowances, arrears from delayed promotions, and failure to remit pension contributions.

He added that the government had also not implemented wage awards or subscribed to a group life insurance scheme for university staff.

He further stressed the need to restore the autonomy of the institution, noting that the government’s continued neglect of these matters forced the union to resume its suspended industrial action.

“The strike, unfortunately, will affect academic activities on campus,” he said, adding that ASUU remains committed to pressing home its demands until the government shows genuine commitment to resolving the issues.
