Normalcy is gradually returning to Nigeria’s aviation sector after workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) ended their nationwide strike, which had severely disrupted flight schedules.
The workers embarked on the industrial action to protest poor conditions of service, citing issues such as non-payment of the revised national minimum wage, exclusion from arrears, and lack of access to key training programs.
The strike brought many flight operations to a halt, with airlines like Air Peace suspending services, while others—such as Ibom Air and XEJET—continued limited operations. The walkout followed several warnings by the unions to NiMet’s management regarding unfulfilled promises concerning staff welfare.
Resolution came after a meeting in Abuja with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
Present at the meeting were the Director General of NiMet, representatives from the NCAA, and leaders of several aviation unions including the National Union of Air Transport Employees and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals.
The workers have now returned to duty, bringing relief to the aviation industry and travelers across the country.
