Tragedy struck in Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State after an 18-year-old girl died following a botched abortion allegedly arranged by three men, the Bauchi State Police Command said in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the police, the victim, whose name was withheld, was lured into a sexual relationship by two young men; Usman Umar, 22, and Sallau Ayuba, 21—both residents of Misau.
The encounters, which reportedly occurred at multiple locations including Mahmood Lodge in Misau, resulted in the girl becoming pregnant.
Upon discovering the pregnancy, the duo allegedly conspired with a third suspect, Abubakar Mohammed, a 35-year-old year-two student of A.D. Rufai College for Islamic and Legal Studies, to terminate it.
Mohammed was reportedly offered the sum of ₦40,000 to carry out the abortion using an injection.
“After the injection was administered, the victim lost consciousness and became critically ill,” said CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Bauchi State Command.
She was first rushed to the General Hospital in Misau before being referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Azare, where she was later pronounced dead.
Following the incident, all three suspects were arrested and have allegedly confessed to the crime.
Police say they have also identified additional individuals connected to the case.
These include Alkali Kawu, Maule Mai Ride, Mai Tomatoes, Danguli, Yakubu, and Kura, a civil servant.
Four others are also being investigated at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Misau.
“The Command reaffirms its commitment and steadfastness in carrying out its statutory responsibility to ensure justice is served accordingly,” Wakil stated, assuring that the suspects will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
