The Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Students Union (BSU) has kicked off a fundraising campaign aiming to raise $25,000 for the funeral of Olatunji Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, who was tragically shot on April 16, 2025, in Centre City, Philadelphia.
Bolaji, a husband, father, and grandfather, was fatally wounded while waiting outside the Byblos Hookah Lounge for a passenger. The shooting occurred during a dispute when two men, who had exited a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee, opened fire.
Bolaji was hit in the back of the head and crashed his vehicle a block away on Chestnut Street.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspects are still at large.
In light of this heartbreaking event, BSU Philadelphia Chapter President Alex Morris launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Bolaji’s family.
The fundraising statement expressed deep sorrow, saying, “We are devastated by the senseless loss of Olatunji Bolaji— a 77-year-old father, grandfather, husband, and dedicated rideshare driver, who was tragically taken while simply doing his job.”
At the time of this report, the campaign had raised $1,712 from 19 donations.
Morris outlined how the funds will be used: $12,000 for funeral and memorial service expenses, $5,000 for living expenses during this difficult time, and $3,000 for counseling services for the family. He also mentioned that any excess funds would be used to establish a trust for Bolaji’s grandchildren, including his unborn grandchild.
Morris confirmed that all donations would go directly to Bolaji’s widow, Charice Bolaji, through her bank account.
In the event that she cannot receive the funds, he assured donors that he would personally deliver the donations with full transparency and receipts.
“Ola drove many neighbors home safely; now it’s our turn to help his family through their darkest moment,” Morris stated.
“Any amount—whether it’s $5, $50, or $500—will help ease the burden. Please share this campaign and keep Ola’s family in your thoughts and prayers.”
