Tensions escalated in Osun State on Monday as the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) exchanged heated words regarding the 2026 governorship race, with calls for the removal of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
In a statement released by NNPP’s state chairman, Dr. Tosin Odeyemi, the party sharply criticized Adeleke’s leadership, claiming his administration lacked direction and placed personal interests above the state’s development.
“Osun deserves better than what we have now,” Odeyemi stated, adding, “We need a leader with a clear understanding of governance—someone who can rise above party politics and serve the people with sincerity.”
Odeyemi urged opposition parties to rally behind a credible candidate, warning that failure to unite could endanger the state’s future.
The PDP quickly responded, dismissing Odeyemi’s accusations as baseless. In a counterstatement, Oladele Bamiji, Director of Media and Publicity for the PDP, accused Odeyemi of making unwarranted claims without an understanding of Adeleke’s achievements.
The PDP highlighted several projects under Adeleke’s leadership, including the construction of more than 200 kilometres of roads, Osun’s first flyover in Ile-Ife, and significant infrastructure development in Osogbo, including dual carriageways and additional flyovers.
Bamiji also pointed to the governor’s efforts to clear outstanding salary arrears, introduce free health insurance for pensioners and people with disabilities, and rehabilitate over 200 primary healthcare centres.
“If Odeyemi disregards these accomplishments, it’s clear that political bias is clouding his judgment,” the PDP’s statement read.
The ruling party expressed strong confidence in Adeleke’s continued popularity among the people of Osun and emphasized that the governor remained dedicated to impactful governance, regardless of political opposition.
As the 2026 election approaches, the rivalry between the NNPP and PDP is intensifying, signaling a competitive and contentious battle for leadership in Osun State.
