The Inspector-General of Police, Dr Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced an immediate reorganization of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) to bolster internal security and enhance operational readiness across the country.
The directive was made public during a conference with PMF Squadron Commanders held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
Egbetokun, in his address, emphasized the need to realign the PMF with its core mandate as the Nigeria Police Force’s elite tactical unit, created to swiftly respond to riots, emergencies, and violent threats.
He expressed concern over the persistent misuse of PMF personnel, particularly their diversion to escort and guard duties for private individuals and VIPs—a practice he said has compromised the unit’s effectiveness.
To restore the unit’s efficiency, the IGP ordered the immediate withdrawal of PMF officers from unauthorized assignments.
He also announced that all Squadrons will be mandated to maintain fully equipped, combat-ready units on standby for rapid deployment.
Furthermore, the PMF will now undergo regular quarterly training with a focus on ethics, professionalism, and tactical preparedness.
In a bid to enforce accountability, PMF Commanders will be held responsible for the conduct of their personnel.
Egbetokun urged the commanders to lead by example through consistent training, inspections, and mentorship that promotes discipline, respect for human rights, and operational excellence.
He also disclosed plans to introduce new leadership strategies and capacity-building programs aimed at tackling contemporary security challenges while aligning with global best practices.
While expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continuous support, the IGP also acknowledged the contributions of international partners in strengthening the training and technical capabilities of the Force.
Dr Egbetokun encouraged PMF commanders to see the ongoing reforms as both a professional obligation and a moral duty, reiterating the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the protection of lives, property, and national security.
The press release was issued by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
