A truck driver narrowly escaped lynching over the weekend after his vehicle was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of three people.
Those who died included a couple, at the Itagbanja axis of Oke-Aro, along Idanre Road in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the Ondo State capital, involved a commercial tricycle and a truck, both reportedly driven recklessly.
Eyewitnesses said the crash was so severe that two of the victims died instantly, while the third succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital.
The identities of the deceased were yet to be confirmed as of press time.
In the aftermath of the accident, tension erupted in the area as enraged residents and youths mobilised to attack the truck driver.
However, he managed to flee the scene and later surrendered himself at the ‘B’ Division Police Station in Oke-Aro.
The situation escalated further when news of his whereabouts spread, prompting a crowd of angry protesters to storm the station, pelting it with stones and demanding justice for the victims.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited in the mortuary, while the Ondo State Police Command has confirmed that investigations are underway.
