Nigerian Uber driver shot in Philadelphia

Must read

A 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji W. Bolaji, was killed early Wednesday morning in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a shooting that also left his 22-year-old passenger critically injured.

Reports indicate that Bolaji had picked up the passenger outside Byblos Hookah Bar near Rittenhouse Square around 2 a.m.

Shortly after starting the ride, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee with Massachusetts plates followed Bolaji’s SUV.

Two individuals exited the Jeep, and one of them opened fire, hitting both Bolaji and his passenger.

Despite being shot in the head, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing into a pole at the intersection of 17th and Chestnut Streets, where he was later pronounced dead.

His passenger was shot multiple times in the arm, leg, and stomach and was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.

Surveillance footage of the incident is being reviewed by law enforcement as they work to identify the suspects. Authorities are investigating a possible confrontation between the passenger and the assailants prior to the shooting, though the motive remains unclear.

Uber has expressed its condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and extend our heartfelt sympathy to the driver’s family and loved ones. We are in contact with the police to support their efforts in finding those responsible.”

Friends and neighbors described Bolaji as a kind and hardworking individual who was devoted to his family.

A longtime friend shared that Bolaji was a proud father, with his son being a college graduate.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family cover funeral costs, living expenses, and counseling during this challenging time.
