PDP on brink of collapse – Fayose

Must read

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has raised serious concerns about the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the party is on the verge of collapse unless immediate reconciliation efforts are undertaken.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Friday, Fayose described the PDP as deeply divided and lacking meaningful leadership.

He said the ongoing crisis within the party is the result of longstanding internal conflicts that have not been addressed.

“The situation in the PDP is both unfortunate and disheartening. This is not a problem that started yesterday. The party has failed to take bold steps toward reconciliation or bridge-building. Everyone seems focused on personal interests—it’s power versus power, strength against strength,” he said.

Using vivid metaphors, Fayose likened the PDP to a broken structure with no unity of purpose. “People are busy protecting their tea, their cups, and their turf. And when you try to sweep with just one broom, you’ll hardly get the floor clean,” he noted, highlighting the party’s lack of cohesion.

Fayose openly acknowledged the leadership vacuum in the party’s National Working Committee, questioning the source of direction within the PDP.

“Where is the peace? Where is the leadership? Who is issuing directives? This kind of confusion has never happened before,” he said.

While he refrained from pointing fingers, Fayose made it clear that the responsibility lies with the party’s leadership.

“I’m not here to trade blame, but the reality is that the buck stops at the desk of the National Working Committee,” he stated.

Addressing issues related to party structure and legal disputes, the former governor stressed the importance of respecting judicial authority.

“The rulings of the Supreme Court must be upheld. When a court speaks, it is final. You can’t build anything stable on a faulty foundation,” he warned.

Fayose also spoke on the influence of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, describing him as a political force that must be engaged with wisdom.

“If someone says he’s coming to your house and he shows up at the door, then you know he means business. Wike is a bulldozer—he must be handled strategically,” he said.

On the 2027 presidency, Fayose voiced his support for the South retaining power after President Bola Tinubu’s first term.

He cautioned against any move to return the presidency to the North, suggesting it would be politically unwise and destabilizing.

Concluding his remarks, Fayose said the PDP is in urgent need of internal healing. “Let’s be honest: the party is not in good shape. Unless a miracle happens, we may not reach the destination we once dreamed of,” he said.
