Man killed in Niger over dispute involving divorced woman

Must read

A tragic incident unfolded in Niger State where a man named Muhammad Ma’aba from Fujeregi village in Gbako Local Government Area lost his life after being assaulted.

Eyewitnesses say Ma’aba was waylaid along the Saganuwa-Fujeregi road by a group allegedly led by one Alhaji Yikangi, a resident of Chikan village.

Yikangi was said to be the former husband of Fatima Suleiman, the woman Ma’aba had planned to marry.

The assault is believed to have been sparked by a prolonged disagreement over Fatima.

Though she had been divorced three times by Yikangi, an act that makes remarriage under Islamic law impermissible, he was reportedly against her decision to marry someone else and wanted her to remain single.

Confirming the event, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that on April 17, 2025, at about 2:00 PM, the police received a report that Ma’aba was brutally attacked by individuals led by Alhaji Yikangi.

Ma’aba, who was seriously injured and fell into a coma, was rushed to Lemu General Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

The police have launched an investigation and are working to apprehend all suspects linked to the incident.
