In a chilling incident in Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, Anambra State, a suspected serial rapist, Chidiebere Mbene, has been arrested.
The police arrested Mbene for the brutal murder of 15-year-old Nwokedi Michael Somtochukwu and the molestation of the victim’s elder sister.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest on Friday, April 18, 2025, highlighting the suspect’s heinous crimes that have shocked the community.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, Mbene, aged 33, allegedly raped the deceased boy’s elder sister before killing the teenager on April 15, 2025.
The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended following swift collaboration between the Nnewi community and the police.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the community’s vigilance, stating, “The arrest of Chidiebere Mbene reflects the power of community policing and public cooperation in tackling crime.”
He emphasized the police’s commitment to rooting out criminals in the state and ensuring justice.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation.
CP Orutugu assured the public that the police will continue to rely on community support to apprehend suspects and maintain law and order in Anambra State.
