Tragedy struck on Friday near Jere town along the busy Abuja–Kaduna highway when a multiple-vehicle crash led to several fatalities and numerous injuries.
The incident occurred near Katari village, a location notorious for bottlenecks due to ongoing road construction and the lack of a proper shoulder for vehicles.
Preliminary accounts from eyewitnesses suggest that aggressive overtaking through a narrow diversion was a contributing factor.
“A lot of drivers don’t have the patience required for that narrow stretch. It’s a recipe for disaster,” a road user told reporters.
Authorities have previously attempted to reduce accidents in the area by redesigning some diversion points.
However, enforcement of road safety practices remains a weak link.
As rescue teams worked to evacuate victims from the wreckage, officials had yet to confirm the exact number of dead and injured.
