Kano APC open to Kwankwaso’s return, requests apology over past comments

Must read

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has said it would welcome Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso if he decides to return to the party, but insists that an apology for past remarks against party leaders must come first.

Speaking at a press conference in Kano on Friday, the state APC chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, said the party has noted ongoing speculations about Kwankwaso’s possible defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) back to the APC.

He described the move as a positive step, noting that the APC remains Kwankwaso’s last political option, claiming the former governor has already burned bridges with other political groups across the country.

“As part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, our party has begun efforts to receive defectors from various political backgrounds,” Abbas said.

“We’ve heard rumours of Senator Kwankwaso’s possible return, and while the APC is open to all, we also have clear principles.”

He added that ward-level party offices across the state have been instructed to open their registers to accommodate new members, regardless of their political history or status.

“All intending members are advised to register at their respective wards. Our existing party officials at all levels will remain in office until the expiration of their tenure, as stated in the party’s constitution,” he explained.

Abbas, however, criticized some of those seeking to return to the APC, saying they had damaged their political reputations and are now seeking relevance by aligning with the ruling party.

He warned that the APC would not tolerate any form of cult-like political factions within its ranks and made it clear that loyalty and respect are expected from all party members.

“We are also calling on anyone who previously made disrespectful comments about our national leaders—particularly President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima—to issue a public apology,” he said. “This act of contrition will be seen as a gesture of goodwill and a foundation for future cooperation.”
