The Anambra State Police Command has opened an investigation following the death of a woman, Chiamaka Okeke, allegedly shot by a member of a state-backed security team, ‘Agunechemba,’ in Nnewi.
Eyewitnesses said the tragic event happened on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the bustling Ibeto Junction in Nnewi Local Government Area.
According to reports, traffic had stalled the busy road when a convoy belonging to Agunechemba operatives approached.
In an attempt to disperse the congestion and pave way for the convoy, the security personnel reportedly fired several gunshots into the air.
Unfortunately, a stray bullet struck Chiamaka Okeke, causing her to collapse on the spot.
The sudden shooting caused chaos, with pedestrians and motorists scrambling for cover.
The operatives involved were said to have fled the scene shortly after.
The victim was quickly taken to a nearby medical facility but was confirmed dead by attending doctors.
State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued the following day.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had called for calm and assured the public that the command was collaborating with the relevant security unit to track down the officer responsible and ensure justice is done.
He added that investigations are ongoing and updates would be made available in due course.
