NSCDC uncovers five illegal oil depots in Abuja, arrests seven suspects

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has revealed the discovery of five clandestine crude oil storage sites in the Jahi and Katampe areas of Abuja.

NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale, in a statement issued Thursday, confirmed that “seven suspects were apprehended in connection with illegal crude oil production and distribution.”

The operation was executed by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS), which also confiscated several trucks allegedly used to transport stolen Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

One of the key findings was “a white truck with three compartments fully loaded with 45,000 litres of AGO with an unverifiable waybill seen at the illegal dump,” Babawale noted.

Other impounded items include “four Mercedes-Benz short peddler trucks, several other vehicles, pumping machines, different-sized hoses, a Mikano generator, approximately 23 surface metallic constructed tanks—some already containing large quantities of suspected AGO—and a container shelter,” the statement added.

According to the spokesperson, the arrests demonstrate the corps’ commitment to combating oil theft, as “the CG’s SIS remains steadfast in its mission to rid the country of crude oil thieves.”

He also stressed that “the suspects would be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to other criminals.”
