FG facilitates release of six Nigerian women held in Cape Verde

The Federal Government has facilitated the release of six Nigerian women who were wrongfully detained in Cape Verde over baseless trafficking accusations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the women have now regained their freedom and have left Cape Verde.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, revealed that the Nigerian Mission in Guinea Bissau played a key role in engaging Cape Verdean authorities to secure their release.

The ministry explained that the women had travelled to Cape Verde for a vacation but were arrested based on unproven trafficking claims, which were eventually dismissed.

Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, the Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the interests and rights of Nigerians abroad.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to inform that the Nigerian women previously detained in Cape Verde have been released and have departed the country.

“Their release followed sustained efforts by our Mission in Guinea Bissau in collaboration with authorities in Cape Verde. The ladies were on a holiday trip when they were wrongly accused of trafficking,” the statement said.

Recall that AFRIPOST had yesterday reported that the tourists were held in Cape Verde.
