An armed man was arrested outside UnitedHealthcare’s headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota, on Monday, April 14, following a standoff that has sparked federal interest.
The dramatic incident occurred just months after the shocking December killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City.
Police said the unidentified man claimed to have a weapon and demanded $1 million during a call with authorities.
Sitting inside his vehicle outside the corporate building, he allegedly told law enforcement he wanted to speak to a negotiator and said he had a pistol.
Officers later confirmed a firearm was recovered from the suspect’s car.
The FBI joined local police at the scene and managed to convince the man to surrender peacefully.
The Minnetonka Police Department later stated there was “no threat to the public” following the arrest, though the building was heavily secured during the standoff late Monday morning.
Security around the healthcare company’s campus has reportedly been increased ever since CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Manhattan on December 4.
A visible police presence has remained in place since the tragedy.
Thompson had been scheduled to deliver remarks at a conference the same day he was killed.
The accused, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, has entered a not-guilty plea to multiple charges, including terrorism and murder.
Federal prosecutors are also pursuing the death penalty.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the incident as a deliberate political act, stating it was “An act of political violence” and asserting that Mangione “deliberately stalked and murdered Thompson in broad daylight, endangering the public.”
Mangione’s defence attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, rebuked the federal stance, saying the push for execution is “barbaric.”
Authorities have yet to disclose any ties between the arrested man and Mangione. Investigations are still underway.
