The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as “Portable,” over allegations bordering on criminal defamation and other related offences.
According to a press statement issued late Sunday, April 13, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the arrest followed a petition submitted by one Mr. Okunola Saheed, popularly known as “Osupa.”
Ejire-Adeyemi said the allegations against Portable include “criminal defamation, threat to life, incitement, character assassination, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and the use of abusive and insulting words.”
“In view of the weight of these allegations and the supporting evidence presented, the Command secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin,” the statement read.
Acting on the court order, police operatives from the Kwara Command proceeded to Abeokuta, Ogun State, where the singer was arrested around 7:25 p.m. on Saturday.
“He was immediately brought to Ilorin for further investigations,” Ejire-Adeyemi added.
The police spokesperson disclosed that Portable’s statement was obtained in the presence of legal representatives from both parties.
The suspect is currently in custody, with plans underway to charge him in court.
“The Kwara State Police Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served in a fair and transparent manner.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information,” Ejire-Adeyemi said.
Further updates on the case are expected to be released as investigations progress.
