Cultist remanded in Ondo for murder of resident

A 25-year-old man, Suberu Abdullahi, has been ordered to remain in custody at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure, Ondo State, over his alleged involvement in the murder of one Rafiu Adedeji.

Abdullahi, whose residential address was not disclosed, was arraigned before Magistrate Damilola Sekoni at an Akure Magistrate’s Court by the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps.

He is facing a three-count charge that includes conspiracy, murder, and unlawful membership of a secret society.

State Prosecutor P.O. Nwafor informed the court that the defendant, along with others still at large, was responsible for the brutal killing of Rafiu Adedeji on January 7, 2025, around 7:20 a.m. at Ikare Junction in Owo Local Government Area.

According to the charge sheet presented in court, “That you, Suberu Abdullahi, on January 7, 2025, at about 7:20am at Ikare Junction, Owo, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, did unlawfully kill Rafiu Adedeji, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”

It further stated, “That you, Suberu Abdullahi, on January 7, 2025, at about 7:20am at Ikare Junction, Owo, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, did belong to a secret society (AVE) prohibited by law and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 1 (1), Cultism, Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, Cap 39, Vol 2, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”

The prosecutor requested that Abdullahi be remanded in custody pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In response, the defence counsel, O. Adedapo, sought an adjournment to enable him to respond to the application made by the prosecution.

Magistrate Sekoni granted the request, set the next hearing for April 16, and directed that the suspect be held at the correctional facility until then.
