A man suspected to be mentally unstable has been taken into custody by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly defacing the Agemo statue located at Itoro Roundabout in Ijebu Ode.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the state police spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, in Abeokuta.
The Agemo deity holds significant spiritual importance among the Ijebu people, regarded as one of their highest and most revered deities.
According to Odutola, the man reportedly damaged the statue by removing its crown, an act considered sacrilegious by traditional adherents.
The detached crown has since been retrieved and is currently secured at the Obalende Police Station in Ijebu Ode.
She also stated that the prompt response of police officers at the location helped to ease tensions and prevent any outbreak of violence from aggrieved worshippers.
“The individual is currently undergoing psychiatric assessment, as early indications suggest he may be mentally unwell,” Odutola said.
She assured residents that the situation in Ijebu Ode is under control and that public peace and safety remain a top priority as investigations proceed.
