Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday officially commissioned the newly completed 46.3-kilometre Joe Irukwu Way, which stretches across Umuahia North, Bende, and Ohafia Local Government Areas in Abia State.

The road, which was previously known as Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Ozuitem–Lohum–Nkpa–Umuimenyi–Isuikwuato–Alayi–Item–Igbere–Abiriba Road, was renamed by Governor Alex Otti in honour of the late insurance expert and past President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Joe Irukwu (SAN), who hailed from the state.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held in Uzuakoli, Bende LGA, Obasanjo applauded the state government for its commitment to infrastructure renewal, particularly in the face of current economic hardships.

He recalled a previous journey he made along the same route, describing it as extremely difficult.

However, he noted that the reconstructed road now allows a smooth drive from Umuahia to Abiriba in under an hour.

“I was told it now takes just 45 minutes. I said, ‘This man, Alex Otti, is indeed a miracle worker,’” he remarked.

Obasanjo stressed the economic importance of the road, noting that it would significantly improve the productivity and quality of life for residents in the area.

He also emphasized that true leadership is marked by vision, discipline, and a commitment to eliminate corruption and waste.

While praising Governor Otti’s approach to governance, Obasanjo urged the public to support leaders who demonstrate integrity and dedication, regardless of political affiliation.

“What matters most is the quality of the individual, not the platform. In Alex Otti, we have found a man of exceptional quality,” he added, advising voters not to replace a performing leader during elections.

He cautioned against taking good governance for granted and pledged his continued support to the governor.

In his remarks, Governor Otti described the road project as a significant step toward fulfilling his administration’s goal of creating long-lasting infrastructure.

He revealed that the final phase of the road, which runs from Abiriba to Ohafia, is nearing completion and is being handled by a reputable firm.

The governor highlighted the benefits of the new road, including reduced travel time, better security, and lower transportation costs for residents and businesses.

He added that the improved condition of the road would allow free movement at all hours, reducing the risk of criminal attacks that were once common due to the poor state of the route.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, said the road would improve the daily lives of citizens and thanked the state government for its efforts in delivering dividends of democracy.

Also speaking at the event, Federal lawmaker Obi Aguocha and Bende LGA Chairman Uwabunkeonye Bassey expressed appreciation to the government for addressing long-standing transportation challenges.

They noted that the road upgrade would further support agricultural activities in the region, which is known for its farming population.

Commissioner for Works, Otumchere Oti, explained that the project included major repairs of failed sections, improved vertical alignment, and elevation of flood-prone areas.

The entire road was finished with a 40mm layer of asphaltic concrete, while the shoulders were constructed using a 30mm thick surface. Additional features of the project included new drainage systems, culverts, slope protections, and repairs of previously washed-out sections.
