The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially set July 12, 2025, as the date for the upcoming local government elections in the state.
This announcement was made by Tope Ojo, the Head of Public Affairs at LASIEC, on Friday.
The elections will determine the occupants of 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillorship seats across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State.
Ojo stated that in the event of any need for a rerun election, the supplementary poll is scheduled for July 19.
The timing of this announcement is significant as it marks the countdown to the end of the current local government officials’ tenure, prompting LASIEC to begin preparations to avoid any governance gaps at this crucial level of government.
“The release of the official Notice of Election signals the start of electoral activities, and political parties are expected to visit LASIEC to collect nomination forms for their candidates,” Ojo added.
Additionally, LASIEC has planned a meeting with all registered political parties on Tuesday, aimed at engaging them in the electoral process.
The Commission also revealed that comprehensive Election Guidelines will be released by April 17, outlining the rules for the election process, including timelines for nominations and campaign schedules.
Political campaigns and rallies are permitted from April 18 to July 9, allowing political parties ample time to introduce their candidates and policies to voters.
LASIEC’s Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rtd), reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to conducting a free, fair, and inclusive election, ensuring that all political parties, regardless of their size or influence, have a fair opportunity.
