Supporters of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike have deferred a solidarity march in Bayelsa State, initially planned to commend President Bola Tinubu and Wike for appointing Bayelsans to key national positions.
George Turnah, the convener of the NEW Associates and a PDP chieftain, announced the postponement during a press briefing in Yenagoa on Friday.
He said the decision to move the rally to April 26 was reached after discussions with leaders of the Ijaw community and in consideration of potential clashes with rival groups.
The Bayelsa State government had earlier resisted the rally, with a state high court issuing an injunction barring the event.
Coincidentally, Governor Douye Diri’s supporters had also scheduled a rally for the same day, time, and location.
Turnah emphasized that the move reflects the group’s commitment to peace and the value of every Nigerian life.
He said the NEW Associates would rather step aside temporarily to allow others to hold their events in a peaceful and orderly manner.
He thanked supporters for their continued backing and encouraged them to remain ready for the rescheduled rally later in the month.
