Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has downplayed the possibility of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning the state’s governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, stating that the ruling party lacks grassroots support in Anambra.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, Soludo, who will be contesting for a second term under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), argued that the APC doesn’t have the structure to compete in the state.
This comes after APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, identified southern states like Anambra, Osun, Edo, and Oyo as targets for the party in the coming polls. Following the APC’s successful takeover of Edo State last year, Ganduje had expressed confidence that Anambra would be next.
Reacting to those remarks, Soludo argued that Anambra’s political landscape is far different from other states where the APC had gained ground. He cautioned against comparing Anambra with states like Edo, Imo, or Kogi.
“In Imo and Kogi, the APC was already in power and only retained its position. In Edo, the APC had a strong legislative presence at both federal and state levels, making it a tough race. That’s not the case in Anambra,” he explained.
Soludo pointed out that the APC has struggled to make any meaningful impact in Anambra, noting that the party has never secured a councillorship seat in the state.
“In past elections, their support has barely crossed 3 to 4 percent. You can’t build something on nothing,” he said.
Despite his confidence, the governor said APGA would not be complacent and would treat the election as a serious contest. “We’ll go into the election like underdogs. We won’t take anything for granted. Every election is a battle,” he said.
Addressing concerns about possible federal interference, Soludo expressed faith in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. “I believe in INEC, the President, and the Federal Government. I trust that they’ll ensure a fair and credible process,” he stated.
Highlighting his achievements so far, Soludo mentioned improvements in security, education, healthcare, and infrastructure, adding that his administration remains focused on delivering the mandate of good governance to the people.
