SGF launches performance management system to enhance public service efficiency

George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has officially launched a new Performance Management System (PMS) aimed at improving service delivery within Nigeria’s public sector.

At the inauguration on Wednesday, Akume highlighted that the PMS aligns with the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2025 (FCSSIP).

He emphasized that the system, housed within the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), seeks to foster greater transparency and accountability in the public service.

The SGF explained that the PMS holds individuals accountable for their responsibilities by establishing clear expectations and using well-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track progress.

“The system is designed to ensure that civil servants fully understand their roles and are able to perform at their best, with measurable outcomes that lead to the achievement of specific targets,” Akume said.

Nnamdi Mbaeri, the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, praised Akume for his leadership in supporting the PMS initiative.

Mbaeri reiterated the OSGF’s commitment to ensuring the system’s full implementation across all departments.

Anthony Obioha, the Director of Human Resources in the OSGF, stressed that the launch of the PMS marks a critical turning point for every department, urging staff to take ownership of the system and work toward its successful application.

He added that the PMS would create a performance-driven culture, where regular feedback, continuous improvement, and recognition of excellence would be prioritized.

The event concluded with the signing of a performance bond by the five Permanent Secretaries in the OSGF.

Akume is set to extend the agreement to directors in each department, ensuring that the performance management system is fully implemented throughout the civil service.
