Nasarawa expands cash support programme to 6,000 vulnerable citizens

The Nasarawa State Government has extended its monthly cash transfer programme to reach 6,000 low-income earners in the state, according to the Social Investment Agency.

Speaking to reporters after distributing payments in Keffi Local Government Area on Thursday, the agency’s Director General, Imran Usman, disclosed that beneficiaries would now receive N7,000 each month — an increase from the N5,000 initially disbursed when the initiative began.

“This is the 15th round of payments and the programme is designed to last for two years,” Usman explained. “We’re progressing well, and it’s encouraging to see how far we’ve come.”

Usman added that the goal of the initiative goes beyond providing temporary relief.

According to him, many beneficiaries have used the money to start small-scale businesses, and the agency has introduced monitoring to track their progress.

“We’ve had many success stories. Some beneficiaries have grown their ventures, and we’ve provided additional support between N30,000 and N50,000 when funds are available,” he noted.

Reflecting on the programme’s growth, Usman recalled that only 3,800 residents were included in the first phase during Governor Abdullahi Sule’s initial term.

“He praised the governor’s commitment, describing him as a leader who “delivers on promises and truly cares for the people.”

He also emphasized the value of the assistance to the recipients. “It may not seem like much, but to the elderly, widows, and others in need, N7,000 makes a significant difference in their lives,” Usman said.
