The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has fined eight Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) a total of N628 million for violating the monthly energy caps set for unmetered customers between July and September 2024.
The affected DisCos include Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola.
In a statement released on Thursday, NERC confirmed the penalties and ordered the companies to issue credit adjustments to the impacted customers by May 15, 2025.
The statement read, “In accordance with Section 34(1)(d) of the Electricity Act 2023 (EA 2023), the commission has sanctioned eight DisCos – Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola – for their failure to comply with the monthly energy limits prescribed by the commission for the period of July to September 2024.”
The commission emphasized that the fine and subsequent credit adjustments are necessary to uphold regulatory standards and protect consumers within Nigeria’s electricity sector.
