Akpabio petitions police over alleged assassination plot, seeks prosecution of Natasha

Must read

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has submitted a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting an investigation into an alleged assassination plot that he says was wrongly linked to him by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a letter, Akpabio urged the police to investigate the claims and prosecute Akpoti-Uduaghan for what he described as criminal defamation.

The petition, which was also forwarded to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), followed accusations made by Akpoti-Uduaghan during her return to Kogi State on April 1, 2025.

During her address to supporters, she alleged that Akpabio had directed former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello and the incumbent Governor, Usman Ododo, to eliminate her in Kogi and make it seem like her constituents were behind the act.

Akpabio, however, strongly refuted the claims, describing them as baseless, politically motivated, and aimed at undermining his character and public image.

He condemned the allegations as a calculated smear campaign designed to stir political instability and incite public outrage.

According to him, no evidence was provided to support the claims, yet the statements had already circulated widely through various media platforms.

In his petition, the Senate President called on security agencies to act swiftly, stressing that the accusation was not only false but also dangerous.

He maintained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s motive was to tarnish his reputation and mislead the public for political gain.

Akpabio emphasized that such falsehoods, especially when made by public officeholders, must not be taken lightly as they have the potential to disrupt democratic governance and threaten peace.

He concluded by urging that the matter be treated with urgency and that the law be applied to ensure accountability for the alleged defamatory and inciting remarks.
