Delta community protest, shutdown operations of 28,000 barrels-per-day oil facility

Operations at a vital oil production facility in Ogidigben, Warri, capable of producing 28,000 barrels per day, came to a complete standstill on Wednesday following a protest by members of the Itsekiri community.

Footage aired by TVC showed a large crowd of Ogidigben residents staging a demonstration at the facility’s entrance, blocking access and disrupting all activities.

The protesters, visibly aggrieved, demanded immediate attention to long-standing concerns over the effects of oil exploration in their region.

This shutdown highlights ongoing discontent in Nigeria’s South-South, where local communities have repeatedly voiced frustrations over environmental degradation, lack of developmental infrastructure, and limited economic benefits from oil extraction on their lands.

Although the precise demands of the protestors have not been officially outlined, insider reports indicate that traditional Itsekiri leaders are urging authorities to address historical injustices and ensure fair compensation for land usage.

The disruption is expected to ripple through Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy, putting pressure on both the federal government and oil companies to respond promptly and prevent further unrest.
