The Presidency on Monday refuted claims suggesting that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had been removed from office.
Initially, a message that went viral on WhatsApp alleged that Professor Yakubu had been replaced by Professor Bashir Olamilekan, purportedly on the orders of President Bola Tinubu.
The message, which lacked any credible source, stated: “INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmud Yakubu has been replaced with Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan by President Tinubu.”
Reacting to the rumour, the Presidency dismissed it as entirely false.
O’tega Ogra, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, issued a statement urging the public to ignore the information.
He stressed that any changes concerning the INEC leadership would be officially communicated through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) or other designated government channels.
