A tragic road accident on the Ikorodu–Sagamu Road claimed the lives of 18 individuals, including an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred at Gbaga around 4:00 p.m. and involved seven vehicles.

According to a statement by the Ogun State FRSC spokesperson, Florence Okpe, the crash involved a Toyota Hiace bus (AGL 752 YC), a Daf truck (T14007L), a Honda car (HT680), another Daf truck without a registration number, a pickup van (STF10204), and two motorcycles (AGG 448 Q and PKA 214 WS).

Okpe explained that the accident was triggered by the driver of the Hiace bus, who attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver and collided with an oncoming Daf truck.

During the rescue efforts, the unregistered Daf truck reportedly lost its brakes and struck an FRSC officer at the scene, killing him on the spot.

The truck went on to crash into the parked pickup, the Honda car, and the two motorcycles, causing additional destruction and fatalities.

A total of 22 people were involved in the incident. While four sustained injuries and were rushed to Dasochris Hospital in Gbaga, 18 were confirmed dead and their remains taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ogun, Akinwunmi Fasakin, expressed deep sadness over the avoidable loss of lives.

He emphasized the need for drivers to respect traffic rules, avoid reckless driving, and adhere to speed limits to prevent such tragic occurrences.
