Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Anambra State after a decisive victory in the party’s primary election.
In the tightly-contested poll that commenced on Saturday and stretched into the early hours of Sunday, Ukachukwu garnered a total of 1,455 votes, leaving other aspirants far behind.
Valentine Ozigbo secured 67 votes to place second, while Johnbosco Onunkwo followed with 26. Edozie Madu managed just 8 votes. There were also 27 invalid ballots.
The result was officially declared by Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, who served as the APC’s chief returning officer.
He praised Ukachukwu’s emergence, describing him as “the lion of APC in Anambra State,” and lauded the peaceful conduct of the exercise.
With the party’s ticket in hand, Ukachukwu is set to challenge the current governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8.
While expressing gratitude to security personnel and the aspirants for their sportsmanship, Otu stated, “There is no victor, no vanquished in this primary. The party remains united behind the winner.”
Out of 1,630 total delegates, 1,582 were accredited, while others were absent.
In his post-victory remarks, Ukachukwu commended President Bola Tinubu for providing what he termed the first credible APC primary in Anambra’s political history.
“This is just the beginning of a longer journey. We must unite to confront the incumbent. With unity and God’s help, we can win this,” he said, assuring party members of his commitment.
Ukachukwu had previously served as a representative for the Abuja Municipal area in the House of Representatives in 1999.
