The Nigerian Army has dismissed a statement from the Taraba State Police Command concerning the events surrounding the abduction and recovery of an Israeli citizen, Gil Itamar.
AFRIPOST had reported that Itamar was kidnapped on April 3, 2025, in Atim Community along the Takum–Chanchangi route.
However, Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, clarified in a press release that the Army disagreed with the police’s claim that Itamar was abducted while being escorted by military personnel.
Instead, the Army maintained that the Israeli was traveling alone when he was seized.
The Army also challenged the police’s assertion that a gunfight occurred during the rescue operation.
According to Captain Oni, Mr. Itamar was freed without any shots being fired, thanks to an intelligence-driven effort that involved local community leaders and youth representatives in Kofai Ahmadu, Apako, and Chanchangi.
Acknowledging the importance of collaboration among security forces, the Army urged the Taraba Police to verify facts before making public declarations, warning that inaccurate reports could mislead the public and weaken ongoing security efforts.
Earlier, police spokesperson James Lashen had reported that Itamar was kidnapped under military protection and later rescued following a violent exchange of gunfire involving police officers, soldiers, and local hunters.
The differing versions of the incident have raised concerns about coordination lapses between the agencies involved, even though the operation concluded successfully.
Mr. Itamar is currently receiving medical care at the SCC Company clinic in Takum.
