IGP summons Emir Sanusi over palace incident during sallah festivities

Must read

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has invited Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II for questioning over an incident that occurred at the palace during the recent Sallah celebration, amid ongoing tensions surrounding traditional leadership in Kano State.

According to a letter dated April 4, Emir Sanusi has been directed to appear before the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on April 8.

The document, obtained by Peoples Gazette, noted that the invitation is related to an incident that took place within the Emir’s domain during the festive period.

“I have the directive of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting,” the letter stated.

“You are to appear at the Force Intelligence Department, located opposite the Police Force Headquarters, Area 11, Abuja, by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. Your attendance is important for the purpose of a thorough investigation.”

While specific details of the incident remain undisclosed, the invitation comes amidst a deepening rift between Emir Sanusi and his cousin, Aminu Bayero, as the traditional leadership tussle in Kano continues.

Earlier in the week, the police halted the traditional Sallah Durbar procession in Kano, citing concerns over public safety.

In March, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal placed a temporary hold on the enforcement of its ruling which had supported the Kano State Government’s repeal of the 2019 Emirate Council Law.

The ruling put Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement on hold pending a final decision by the Supreme Court.
