Education minister proposes two-year NYSC service for all corps members

Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has recommended that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme be extended from its current one-year duration to two years.

This suggestion was made during a courtesy call by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, to the minister’s office in Abuja. A statement shared via NYSC’s official Facebook handle confirmed the proposal.

Alausa further urged an upgrade in the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to provide corps members with more practical training and entrepreneurial skills.

He emphasized the importance of sending more graduate teachers to rural communities, noting that this could bridge the human resource deficit in underserved schools.

Praising NYSC’s digitized mobilization system, the minister applauded its role in reducing certificate fraud among some foreign-educated Nigerian graduates within West Africa.

He also acknowledged the scheme’s resolution of the long-standing exemption issue faced by part-time Ordinary National Diploma (OND) holders with full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) qualifications.

Alausa disclosed ongoing plans by the Ministry to digitize the vetting of foreign-trained Nigerian graduates and promised continued collaboration with NYSC to boost educational development nationwide.

In his remarks, Brigadier General Nafiu expressed support for the Education Ministry’s reforms and suggested creating a national database for Nigerians studying abroad.

This, he said, would help curb the influx of fake degrees into the country.

Also speaking, Permanent Secretary Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to deepening its partnership with NYSC to enhance Nigeria’s education system.
