CCTV Installation on third mainland bridge to curb Suicide – Works Minister

Must read

David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, has revealed that the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is part of efforts to prevent suicide attempts and curb illegal sand excavation.

Umahi made the statement during an appearance on ‘Politics Today’, a program aired on Channels Television, on Friday.

He had previously announced in February that the federal government had equipped the Third Mainland Bridge with surveillance cameras to enhance security.

According to the minister, security personnel will monitor the CCTV feeds to enforce traffic regulations, including speed limits, and to detect any unusual activities.

Umahi also raised concerns about illegal sand excavation beneath the bridge.

“We’ve installed CCTVs under the bridge to monitor and detect any sand excavation activities within a 10-kilometre radius,” he explained.

“We’ve established a security post by the bank of the sea on the Third Mainland Bridge, where personnel from the Navy, Police, Army, and local security agencies will monitor the CCTV footage.”

He emphasized that the new measures would not only help prevent suicide attempts but also put an end to the illegal sand extraction under the bridge.

Also, the minister shared updates on the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, expressing satisfaction with the ongoing work.

He revealed that 30 kilometres of the road would be ready for inauguration by President Bola Tinubu on May 25.
