Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga (Rtd), a former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has opened up about the harrowing experience he endured while in the custody of terrorists.
According to him, the abductors frequently used him and other hostages as human shields during military offensives.
General Tsiga, who regained freedom on Tuesday after more than 50 days in captivity, revealed that their captors fed them only once a day; a meal consisting of millet and salt.
He noted that this poor nutrition severely affected his health, particularly as someone managing hypertension.
He further disclosed that the terrorists displayed utter disregard for human dignity, especially towards retired military officers among the hostages.
“They do not fear God,” Tsiga said. “Their only fear is the presence of military aircraft.”
The retired officer made these remarks shortly after he and other rescued victims were reunited with their families in Abuja.
The handover was conducted by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
Having been hospitalized since his rescue, Tsiga expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the NSA, the CDS, and the entire military and security apparatus for their relentless commitment to tackling the country’s security challenges.
