Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed claims by suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, accusing him of plotting her assassination. He described the allegation as “false and malicious.”
Akpabio’s response was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh.
The controversy began after Akpoti-Uduaghan, while addressing her supporters in Kogi State on Wednesday, alleged that Akpabio conspired with former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to have her assassinated in the state rather than in Abuja.
The Kogi State Government has since denied the claim.
In his statement, Akpabio dismissed the accusation as baseless and aimed at damaging his reputation.
“This outrageous claim is not only false but a complete fabrication—an irresponsible attempt to incite public unrest, gain media attention, and tarnish the image of the Senate President,” he said.
He also recalled a previous allegation of sexual harassment made against him by Akpoti-Uduaghan, which she later abandoned. According to Akpabio, her recent claim is part of a recurring pattern of misinformation and defamation.
He further drew parallels between this situation and a past allegation by former Senator Elisha Abbo, who in 2023 retracted his claims and publicly apologized after admitting they were false.
Akpabio noted that Abbo was later removed from office following a Court of Appeal ruling that invalidated his election.
“These well-coordinated attacks, both in timing and intent, appear politically motivated and driven by hidden interests seeking to undermine the Senate’s leadership,” the statement read.
Akpabio reaffirmed his commitment to his duties, stating that legal action is being initiated.
Reports suggest that letters demanding public retractions, apologies, and compensation for reputational damage are being prepared for both Akpoti-Uduaghan and Abbo.
