We will fine, suspend airlines deporting Nigerian passengers mid-journey – NCAA

Must read

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines over the increasing cases of Nigerian passengers being transported partway to their destinations, only to be deported back to Nigeria.

In a statement on Thursday, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, condemned the practice, stating that it causes distress to travellers and tarnishes the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation sector.

He emphasized that airlines must inform passengers of any potential visa or entry restrictions before departure, as stipulated under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1).

“Passengers must not find themselves stranded or returned due to avoidable entry restrictions,” Achimugu said, stressing that airlines are required to verify travel documents and provide accurate information before boarding.

To curb the issue, the NCAA has implemented immediate enforcement actions.

“Any airline found engaging in these practices will face penalties, including fines, suspension of operations, or other disciplinary measures,” he warned.

The aviation authority urged airlines to uphold professionalism and protect Nigerian travellers from unnecessary hardships.
