Father of slain vigilante seeks justice, compensation from Kano govt, Emirate Council

Muhammadu Rabiu, father of the late Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante member who was fatally stabbed while escorting the entourage of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II after Eid prayers, has demanded justice and compensation from the Kano State Government and the Emirate Council.

In an exclusive interview with SolaceBase on Tuesday, the grieving father recounted the tragic events of March 30, 2025, when his 26-year-old son lost his life.

Surajo, the fourth of twelve children, was a member of the Vigilante Group in Jaba Community, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.

Rabiu revealed that his son had initially planned to skip the Eid prayer to focus on his electrical repair business but changed his mind about 20 minutes later, donned his vigilante uniform, and joined the security team at the prayer ground.

A few hours later, the family received the devastating news of his death.

“Surajo was preparing as usual for the Eid prayer. As a vigilante member, he was often called upon to assist in securing public gatherings. He was a dedicated and hardworking young man,” Rabiu said.

Describing his son as respectful and responsible, he emphasized that Surajo had no ties to criminal elements and was well-regarded in the community.

The family is demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, which occurred despite a police directive banning Durbar-related activities due to security concerns.

The attack also left another individual, Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, injured and receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital.

“We urge the Kano State Government and the Emirate Council to investigate this matter, ensure justice is served, and provide compensation. He was performing his duty as a security officer when he was killed,” Rabiu pleaded.

He further stated that discussions would be held with the leadership of the Vigilante Group to determine what steps to take regarding his son’s death.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects, Usman Sagiru and Nasir Idris, in connection with the killing.

A Special Investigation Panel (SIP) has also been set up by the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to probe the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
